About Biometric Devices

Metrics that is related to different human features and traits is known as biometrics. Its identification (or authentication of biometric) is applied in computer science as something that helps in identifying and controlling. It is also applied to identify different individuals if groups that are under checking.

Identifiers of biometrics are unique and measureable characteristics that can be applied to label as well as describe about individuals. These identifiers are generally distinguished as behavioral as well as physiological characteristics. While physiological characteristics are completely related to body shapes, behavioral characteristics are related to behavior pattern of an individual. Examples of physiological characteristics are palm veins, DNA, face recognition, palm print, iris recognition, hand geometry, odour/scent, retina and these characteristics are not related to fingerprints only. Examples of behavioral characteristics are gait, voice and are not limited to rhythm of typing only. Some of the researchers have created a term ‘behaviometrics’ to explain the latter class of biometrics.

Traditional means of control of access include identification systems that are token based, like license or passport of the driver, and identification systems that are knowledge based, like personal or password identification number. Biometric identifiers are more reliable and trustworthy in identifying token as well as knowledge based methods as they are unique and special to individuals. However, biometric identifier collection increases privacy concerns related to ultimate use of this gathered information.
