About Host Controllers
A host adapter, controller or host bus adapter (HBA) connects the computer to another network as well as storage devices, in the world of computer hardware. The terms are used to depict devices for connecting Fibre Channel, SCSI and eSATA devices as well. But the devices connected to IDE, FireWire, Ethernet, USB as well as other systems may be known as host adapters. Network Interface Controller (abbreviated as NIC) term is generally used for devices that connect to computer networks. On the other hand, the term ‘converged network adapter’ can be used when protocols like Fibre Channel, iSCSI over Ethernet that let storage as well as network functionality over same physical connection. TCP Offload Engines can also be included in this.
